Cabling

This section describes all of the many cables that need to be connected before the AO system will work properly. Be sure that the TUB is positioned to 67 degrees before connecting any cables to anything above the TUB.

The motor control rack is the rack mounted on the west side of the AO optics bench. The computer rack is the rack mounted on the east side of the AO optics bench. The "front side" refers to the side of the AO bench with most of the optics (DM, WFS, etc.). The "back side" refers to the side of the AO bench with most of the electronics and cables.

Power

There are many power cables in this system and it is imperative to get the power distributed properly, otherwise circuit breakers will be tripped and UPSs overloaded.
  1. The tray underneath the AO optical bench has 6 power cables. 4 plug into the motor control rack, 2 plug into the computer rack. The cables and outlets are labeled with colored tape and/or numbers to indicate which plugs go to which outlet.

There are 2 UPS units available for AO power.

    Power Distribution Summary
    UPS OutletPower CableEquipment
    TUB UPSGreen
    Yellow
Pulizzi 1(C) (24V power, filter wheels, red diode laser)
    Pulizzi 2(D) (motor controllers)
    AO UPS (above TUB)Blue(2)
    Orange
    Brown (1)
    White
Pulizzi 4(F) (red light source, white light source, TT 100V, IRCAL motor controller)
    Pulizzi (A) (WFS, LTT cameras)
lgs7, lgs11, ethernet switch, Pulizzi (B) (100V lambda power supply, monitor)
    lgs14, ethernet switch, Pulizzi 3(E)

  2. TUB UPS: The green and yellow labeled power cables get plugged into the TUB UPS plug strip. You may have to unplug some of the unused KAST electronics to get enough free outlets to plug in AO.

The yellow labeled power cable powers Pulizzi 2 (D) (motor controllers).
The green labeled power cable powers Pulizzi 1 (C) (24V power, filter wheels, red diode laser)

  3. AO UPS: You will have to string a long extension cable from the AO UPS to the AO bench back side. Please strain relieve and cable-tie the extension cord in place so it does not accidentally come unplugged. The outlet box gets velcroed to the AO tray. The blue, orange, and brown labeled power cables get plugged into this outlet box.

The blue labeled power cable powers Pulizzi 4 (F) (WLS, RLS, TT 100V, IRCAL motors).
The orange labeled power cable powers a Pulizzi (A) (WFS and LTT cameras).
The white labeled power cable powers lgs7, lgs11, ethernet switch, and Pulizzi (B) (100V lambda power supply, monitor).
The brown labeled power cable powers lgs14, ethernet switch, and Pulizzi 3 (E) (WLS, back WFS camera).

  4. Turn on the power to the Pulizzi power controllers (these are the remotely operated 8 channel power controllers, there are 4 in the motor control rack, 2 in the computer rack).

  5. Make sure power is on for the power strip in the top section of the computer control rack (is shouldn't ever be turned off, but sometimes it is).

  6. [Optional] Cycle power to lgs11 (somestimes it won't communicate properly with the Pulizzi power controllers, but there is a software way to deal with this if you don't cycle the power).

  7. Plug the Slow WFS camera power cable into the labeled outlet on the motor controller rack back side.

Ethernet

  1. Ethernet cable from TUB to computer rack ethernet switch (any port). The ethernet switch is at the top of the computer rack, back side.
  2. There is an ethernet cable strung across the top of the back side of the AO bench. One end gets plugged into any port on the motor control rack ethernet switch. The other end gets plugged into any port on the computer rack ethernet switch (near the top of the back side).

Read Out Room

There are a few cables in the Read Out Room that need to be connected:
  1. WFS camera video: This coax cable connects from TUB patch panel 16 to the Video A In channel of the AO system Sony monitor.
  2. [Optional] Telex communication system consists of two base stations that can be plugged in anywhere. There is a grey cable (labeled Telex at both ends) that connects to the I/C 2 port on the back of each unit.

Motor Control Rack, front side

There are a number of red motor control cables with MS connectors that need to be threaded around the AO bench frame from the back side to the front side.
  1. Motor control cables are all labeled and need to be connected to the correspondingly labeled port on the patch panel.

  2. There are 6 cables DB25 connectors for the Renishaw encoders, labeled Amp 1 to Amp 6, that need to be threaded from the AO bench back side to the front side patch panel. Connect them to the appropriately labeled connectors on the patch panel at the bottorm of the motor control rack.
  3. Red Diode Laser Power: The diode laser transformer plugs into the outlet labeled red laser source.

Motor Control Rack, back side

There are a large number of different cables that need to be connected here and it is easy to miss one (though with this checklist that shouldn't happen, right?).
  1. Slow Wavefront sensor (SWFS) power. The SWFS camera power supply is mounted near the center of AO bench back side. It is a regular 120V power cable that plugs into the labeled outlet at the bottom of the motor control rack back side.
  2. White light source fiber is a metal clad cable strung across the top of the AO bench. This cable gets screwed into the back of the Oriel Radiometric light source.
  3. High Voltage Coax Cables

36Tip/Tilt 100V SupplyConnects to back of TT 100V power supply 36
  4. RJ45 Motor controller cable plugs into the small plastic RJ45-RJ45 junction box.
  5. HeNe Laser power. This cable is a 2 pronged connector, with one prong thicker than the other, so there is only one way to connect it.
  6. IRCAL Cables: See IRCAL section.

Computer Rack, front side

  1. There are 8 blue cables with 32 pin MS connectors that need to be threaded around the AO bench from the back side to the front side. These cables are numbered and need to be plugged into the corresponding port on the patch panel. The cables provide the 100V power and control signals to the DM.

    33TT Mirror X
    34TT Mirror Y
    35TT Mirror 100V Out
    36TT Power 100V In
  • There is one video coax cable:
    1. Video Out connects to TUB patch panel 16.
  • RJ45 connector for the motor controller needs to be connected to the plastic RJ45-RJ45 junction box.
  • LTT and WFS Camera Cables:
Each SciMeasure camera has a bundle of cables (4 color coded coax and a multipin connecter). The cable bundle for each camera is labeled LTT or WFS and should be connected to the similarly labeled electronics box.

    LGS

A few additional cables need to be connected for LGS operations that are not necessary for NGS operations.
    1. Uplink Tip/Tilt cables are stored above the TUB, underneath the lowest Laser cabinet. These high voltage coax cables need to be uncoiled and plugged into the back side of the computer rack. The cables are labeled and connect to J807, J808, and J809, labeled X, Y, and +100, respectively.
    2. Photometrics (Slow WFS) camera cable is a 50pin SCSI cable that needs to go from the lgs13 PC to the Phototmetrics camera, which is located in the middle of the back side of the AO bench. The SCSI cable is bundled with the LGS Uplink Tip/Tilt cables.

    POCO Software

    1. Start the AO version of the POCO server (see instructions elsewhere). (Running the KAST version will allow everything to work except that E and W buttons in the AO and IRCAL GUIs will move the telescope in the opposite direction - a very undesirable feature).
    2. Make sure offload120.sh is running on shard (/usr/local/lick/etc/init.d/offload120.sh). You can use the command
      offload120.sh status
to see if offload120 is running.
To start it, use the command
      offload120.sh start
    3. Make sure telcod is running on shard (/usr/local/lick/etc/init.d/telcod).
    4. Make sure shane_serial is running on shard (/usr/local/lick/etc/init.d/shane_serial).

    IRCAL

IRCAL, the IR camera used with AO, also needs to be cabled up and powered on for use.
    1. IRCAL's Motor Controller is mounted in the motor control rack.
      1. The motor limit cable (MS connector) needs to be threaded around the AO bench and connected to the side of IRCAL.
      2. 3 motor control cables (DB9) need to be threaded around the AO bench and connected to IRCAL. The 3 motor cables are labeled 1, 2, and 3 and should be connected with the same numbered motors.
    2. IRCAL electronics consists of two units, the power supply and the readout electronics.
      1. The Leach electronics box is attached to the outside of the motor control rack. A power cable runs from the power supply to the electronics box.
      2. There is an additional cable that runs from the electronics box to IRCAL. It is very important to make sure you use a grounding strap to the IRCAL chassis while connecting or disconnecting this cable from IRCAL, as the electronics of the PICNIC array are very sensitive to static and could render the camera unusable. When the cable is disconnected from IRCAL, there is a shorting plug that should be put in place to protect the PICNIC array. The shorting plug is stored on the velcro strip near the pre-amp electronics on the IRCAL dewar.
      3. There is a pair of fiber optic cables on the TUB that connect to the IRCAL electronics box.
    3. In the ROR computer room the following cables need to be connected:
      1. The black fiber optic pair cable from the TUB connects to ircalbox2 (the orange fiber optic pair goes to the AO prep room). When properly connected and powered up, the green FO OK LED should be on.
    4. On the telescope, power up the IRCAL electronics. It's the small rocker switch on the blue power supply box next to the Lakeshore controller in the top front of the motor-control rack.
